Working in Monaco
How to work in Monaco?
Working in Monaco attracts many professionals every year thanks to its privileged lifestyle, dynamic economy, and advantageous employment conditions. However, entering the Monegasque job market requires knowledge of certain specific rules. Here is the essential information you need to know to get started.
Have an employment contract before taking any steps
Unlike in some countries, there is no work permit to apply for before being hired. In Monaco, it is the employer who completes the formalities with the Employment Service once you have obtained a position.
In other words: no work without a contract, and no contract without a local employer.
Residing in Monaco is not mandatory.
You can work in the Principality while living in France (especially in the Alpes-Maritimes) or Italy (in the Ventimiglia area). Every day, more than 45,000 cross-border workers enter Monaco to work.
However, hiring priority is defined according to a specific order, favoring:
- Monegasques
- Residents
- People living in neighboring municipalities
- Residents of the Alpes-Maritimes
- Candidates from further afield
Prepare a strong application
The Monegasque job market is competitive. To maximize your chances:
Highlight your technical skills and verifiable experience.
Take care with your resume (keep it simple, clear, and focused on results).
Write a professional cover letter emphasizing rigor, stability, and discretion, qualities that are highly valued in Monaco.
Have your diplomas and certificates ready, as employers sometimes request them.
The Principality of Monaco
Monaco is located on the Mediterranean Sea, along the French Riviera, about twenty kilometers from Nice. It is surrounded by the French towns of Cap-d'Ail, Beausoleil, and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.
It is a constitutional monarchy ruled since 2005 by Sovereign Prince Albert II of Monaco of the Grimaldi dynasty, one of the oldest ruling dynasties in the world.
Today, the state covers an area of 2.027 km², making it the second smallest independent state in the world (the first being the Vatican). At the last census in 2016, Monaco had a population of 38,300. With 18,960 inhabitants per km², it is the most densely populated country in the world.
Almost entirely urbanized, the Principality of Monaco enjoys a particularly mild Mediterranean climate and has many luxury hotels, including the Hôtel de Paris on the Place du Casino in Monte Carlo.
Monaco is renowned worldwide for its international events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, the Tennis Tournament, the Monte Carlo Circus Festival, and the Monte Carlo Rally.
